NATO Alliance
The treaty was signed on April 4, 1949.
Each member of the alliance must agree to mutual defense in response to an attack from any external country or party. NATO’s HQs are in Brussels, Belgium. The newest members being Albania and Croatia, who joined in April 2009. The combined military spending is 70% of the world’s defense spending.
For the first few years NATO was nothing more than a political association. The Korean War however made NATO’s reality galvanized. The military structure was built under two of the United States supreme commanders.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 the organization became immersed in the Breakup of Yugoslavia, and they conducted their first military interventions from 1991 to 1995. NATO is and alliance that consists of 28 independent member countries.
