Korean War
The Korean War started on June 25, 1950 and ended on July 27, 1953. This was a war between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and the Republic of Korea.
This war was because of the splitting of the Korean Peninsula at the end of World War II. The failure to hold free elections on the Korean Peninsula in 1948 deepened their division. The North was a communist government, while the South was a capitalist government. There were many skirmishes and raids at the 38th parallel, the these turned into all out war when North Korean forces invaded South Korea on June 25, 1950.
The United States provided 88% of the 341,000 international soldiers which helped South Korean forces in repelling the Northern Koreans invasions. After fighting for a little more than three years both sides signed an armistice agreement.
This agreement restored the border near the 38th parallel and created the 2.5 mile wide Korean Demilitarized Zone. There are still small outbreaks of fighting to this day.
